The VASA exhibition by Argentinian photographer Judith Rodriguezi opens an avenue for inquiry into the nature of portraiture as the presentation of self. A constructed relationship between the individual, the camera and the image maker. A performance shaped by culture and social context.
The images presented here were constructed while Rodiguez while photographing in Wilson North Carolina, USA. As a practicing psychoanalyst and studies in literature, Judith Rodriguez brings a sensitivity and directness in her relationship with those who stand in front of her camera. The portraits included here are far from being neutral representations, but flow from the imagined meanings formed between the viewer and the authors.
